I’ve been having a huge case of wanderlust lately, maybe it’s because we have a big trip coming up (spoilers) maybe because I’ve been reading too many travel blogs, but most of the time I find myself writing names of places I want to go in the corners of my “ideas” notebook, napkins or wherever piece of paper I can find.
Every year, the rising of the Matariki Constellation announces the beginning of Te tau hou, the Māori New Year. Which is usually celebrated with 31 days of culinary events, performances and concerts. Te tau hou historically occurred at the end of harvest season, where most could fill the storage houses with food and come together to celebrate the end of a year and the beginning of the one to come.
Auckland was filled with Matariki Events during the months of June and July, including a Matariki festival weekend at the Silo Park to celebrate the end of the festivities.
A while back I wrote a little guide for a day out in the city (you can re read it here … or not…I’m not your mom) so today I though I would create another mini guide for this weekend which is the end of the Matariki Festival Month. Hope you enjoy it.
Auckland is mostly know for its cafes and coffee culture, everywhere you turn, you’ll see someone drinking a cup of coffee or a coffee shop, so what best way to start off the day than with some breakfast/brunch. One of the places I love in the city is Shaky Isles (customs street) I’m pretty sure its because of the funny “to-go” cups but mostly its because of how the whole place is decorated. If you want to try something else instead of a classic espresso coffee, right know they are offering syphon, cold drip and filter coffee options, and if you are not a coffee person, that also have teas, smoothies and fruit juices. Top it with something to eat and you are ready to go.
I think I’ve declared my love affair with brunch quite a while ago, i don’t know if its the fact that you can eat that much during breakfast hours and get away with it, or maybe because otherwise i wouldn’t be caught dead eating eggs, potatoes or bacon this early.
A few Sundays back, le boyfriend and I woke up early…again…thanks to that god forsaking bell right across our window (i mean really who was the one who decided is was a good idea to have a bell ringing since 8am every 15 minutes!) anyways… we woke up early and I’ve manage to convince him to go out for brunch and we ended going to Everybody’s in Fort Lane.

Today I bring you one of my favourite markets in Auckland, the La Cigale French Market in Parnell.
I feel its been forever since I wrote one of these, but with winter already here It’s harder to find markets or to find the inner strength to crawl out of bed and go to one.
Last weekend a friend of ours (our very own kiwi born) invited us to spend the weekend in Coromandel. He had booked a “holiday house” better know as a batch in Ferry Landing for a few days, so we went there with a few of our friends.
One thing I love about New Zealand, is that no matter where you are going within the country, there is no way you can be bored,there are always mountains, cliffs, lakes, every time you turn your head there is something to see. Back in Argentina, most routes (specially the one heading south of the country) are mostly plain, there is nothing but kilometres and kilometres of plain grass.
On Friday, by 3.30pm we where already on the road, given that winter has come by the time we got to the house is was super dark, we could hear the sea close to the house but we were not able to see anything, I was not sure what to expect but next day I woke up early in the morning to this view.
Earlier this year,the Auckland Art Gallery was one of the 12 shortlisted buildings in the Culture category for the World Architecture Festival held in Singapore. Not only that, but it was also named winner for building o the year. (yay gallery!)
Because of this (and because I practically live next to it so I spend my “bored” hours there) I though it might be a god idea to tell you all what’s currently happening in the gallery for those interested on visiting.
In the Mezzanine hall you can find a series of Japanese prints created in a style called Ukiyo-e which is pretty much a style of painting by stamping a carved piece of wood into a canvas, if you think about it, it is one on the oldest and maybe first methods of printing. (ha…and I though I would remember anything from my art classes at university) The whole exhibition is comprised of six themes, from landscapes, to depictions of war and theater.
This is actually a photographic exhibition in the second floor terrace of the gallery and it features the work of artist Mladen Bizumic as he marks the relationship between colour film in 1935 and the legacy of Kodachrome’s 12-colour palette after the company Eastman Kodak filled for bankruptcy on 2012. What really stroked me of the exhibit was how the colored acrylic holder are placed against the foliage of the Albert park (not sure if this is meant to be or just luck)
and last but not least is Kangaroo Crew
developed in collaboration with Indigenous Aussie artist Gordon Hookey, from the Waanyi people. This is great option for people with little children (or little adults as well…I had a blast) It features a animation and artwork from The Sacred Hill a narrative created by Hookey and a workshop section to create your own Kangaroo Mask.

Last Saturday a friend of mine had her birthday and she decided to celebrate it by having a huge brunch at Soljans Winery,located west from Auckland city in the Kumeu Region. From what I could see and asked, the venue can be used for different purposes, they have a restaurant and a function centre that serves perfectly for wedding receptions and such and a huge vineyard and winery planted with Pinot gris, Chardonnay and Pinotage grapes (which they’ve told me are the best of that region)
But let’s be honest, you are not here to read about the characteristic of the venue (or that suddenly a guy on an helicopter decided to “park” right in the middle of the yard) you are here because of the food.
